Interesting about what Worried said about the cremation costs. I was the one who handled both inlaws burial and this was not mentioned so I looked it up.

When my father-in-law died two years ago, he had a $10,000 life insurance policy iussed from the Feds/ Veterans Administration, (not sure who as I didn't look at it) BUT he was a Korean War Vet, so I'm sure things have changed since then. Concerning monetary things, he was entitled to a free grave marker which actually is pretty nice.

Reno has VA offices. In fact, Reno is where the regional VA office is located as well as the veterans hospital. You don’t need look outside of Reno for help with this. Just contact the regional VA office. When my FIL, a Vietnam veteran passed, the VA did not pay for anything upfront. We were instructed to pay out of pocket & send the VA the receipt for his cremation and they would reimburse part of the cost (I don’t know if my BIL follow through on that). We were able to have his ashes interned at a national cemetery at no cost and it included a grave marker.

Mavocato, was this Veteran receiving any kind of benefits before death?  If not, contact the closest VA office near Reno, either at the county, state, or federal level (such as a VA hospital), and ask to speak to someone about potential death benefits.  

At this point I don't remember much what my father was entitled to, but I think it was a flag as well as a 21 gun salute.  He did serve during WWII.  But none of the funeral costs were paid for.

If there aren't any local VA offices, you might try VFW or American Legion, but ask them for contact information on those branches that do work with the VA.

Hi there, my grandpa was 88 when he passed this last February. He only served a year or two - didn't go to war. But when we went into the funeral home to get his remains taken care of, the staff there were very knowledgeable on what he was entitled to, who to contact. etc. We just emailed over some paperwork after our meeting and they took it from there. I don't have much more information for you, but it might be a good starting point.
