I'm a dedicated chef, husband, stepfather for 10 years (25 years chef), and also the youngest of 4. My family and I took on the challenge of caring, poa, as well as providing housing for my dementia stricken father, brought about by several strokes. He's mostly blind, deaf, immobility of about 95%, up to his eyeballs in debt with only ssi (1900/month) to rely on to compliment his horrible credit score. He is in need of a place to live immediately, as my family and I are being evicted by the end of May 2024. We are allowed to move in with my mother in law temporarily, but dad isn't welcome unfortunately. Please help me as I'm financially ill-stricken as well. I'm also no longer able to make decisions as I've been admitted into mental health facility lately. I need a solution for my father. Please help me or assist me in the right direction. I'm not capable anymore of making decisions for anyone.

I would call APS. Hopefully they will find him a place in a hurry. Then help with the Medicaid application. Remember, you are not responsible for his debts.

Call APS as Alva advises in the comments. Then sadly you will probably have to do a 'Social Admit' also known as an 'ER Dump' with your father.

How this works is you bring him to a hospital ER and tell them you need a 'Social Admit' (use these actual words) because you lost your home and the people who are going to temporarily shelter you cannot take your father in and he is officially homeless and in need of care.

The hospital will admit him and keep him until they will find a long-term care facility for him to be moved to.

Bring him to the ER and ask for the 'Social Admit'.

Geaton and Mstrbill have this one for you.
This is a matter for APS at once. You AND your Dad need their help right now.
I am so sorry this is happening for you.
I hope that you can update us.
You badly need the social safety net in your own area.

Medicare doesn't cover custodial care in a facility but Medicaid does. However, your Dad needs to qualify financially (sounds like he would) AND medically (most states' Medicaid only covers LTC, not AL or MC).

Here is the solution for both of you:

Resign your PoA legally and contact social services. Your Dad will be assigned a caseworker. A judge will appoint a 3rd party guardian who will provide for and manage all his needs. Our family had a very good, very positive experience with a court-appointed guardian for my SFIL with Parkinsons and Lewy Body dementia. Your Dad's debts and credit scores won't have any impact once he is managed by the guardian.

APS, or you can tell the social worker or nurse at the mental health facility about your father. Even the police. If it is urgent, call 911. But the people that are supposed to handle situations like this are your state's Adult(or Elderly) Protective Services.
