I wanted to recommend a good book called Being Mortal by Dr. Gawande. It's about what's important for the patient, not just "fixing" the medical issue so you can live longer. I think for this particular group you'll find it interesting.

Needhelpwithmom:  I don't think so. It discusses what's important to the patient in leading a satisfying and fulfilling life, and some innovations in more positive nursing homes.
