Hey folks, welcome to the new whine/general topic thread. Feel free to use this thread to discuss anything that is on your mind. Caregiving- related stuff, life after a loved one's death, your own emotional wellbeing. Whatever..........anything on your mind.
Has anyone thought to go back to the olden days and use Mentholatum to ease cracked lips, chest congestion, and nose inflammation? OTC (Over the Counter).
Vicks is not as good, imo.
Do not take Mentholatum internally, rub it on close to the nostril, but not inside.
Allow steam to the face to prevent the inside of nose from cracking and bleeding.
Pammzi, The heat makes me nauseous, and I get way upset at 75 degrees. We have a heat pump, it does not use gas. Be sure to ventilate the house too. Even if you open things up, turn on some fans for 20 minutes, then close it back up.
I use a mini fan nearby my bed to circulate the air, it does not blow directly onto my face.
Sinuses, again. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and Sprouts sells something called Sinus Blaster. It might have horseradish in it. Get some, use it once.
Hope your pain goes away. I do find turmeric helps with any
pains I am having.
One thing I found good for the pain you describe is tart cherries. You can buy a supplement but, I prefer to eat them, just a handful a day makes a noticeable difference for me. I mix them with mixed nuts and use them as breakfast or snacks. If you can tolerate tumeric it too is beneficial, I, unfortunately, get migraines from it. Hope is helps you, be sure it has black pepper, works better.
I hope you feel better soon.
Nacy, are you sure this is new and not one of those nasty super bugs that take months to fully recover from? Not covid or flu either, could be the new improved bronchitis or walking pneumonia, just something to consider since he has been ill recently.
Anyways, I pray that everyone has improved health, gets better soon and stays well.
My dH suffers from sinus infections.
Just riding his bike in the Santa Ana winds can cause it.
It really messes with his functioning, so we try to prevent it.
When he had a tooth filled, he immediately got a sinus infection, the dentist saying that he never heard of a correlation sinus/teeth. Two weeks later, when filling a second tooth, he got a sinus infection within two hours.
Oregano Oil-
He rarely gets any sinus infections anymore.. At the first sign, or if he rides his bike in the wind, he rubs one or two drops onto his palms, cups his hand over his mouth and nose (less than 10 minutes it takes). 2-3 times a day. This is the cure.
But also try what Isthisrealyreal has suggested. The goal is to prevent inflammation by keeping your sinuses moist with steam or a humidifier.
OR, if you are cooking the cabbage and broth yourself over the stove, the
steam from that can also help, as well as eating the cabbage.
The meds mentioned will dry out your sinuses, starting a vicious circle of drying them out/inflammation from dryness/inflammation leads to infection, yada yada yada, and around you go, never getting well.
Of course teeth are related to sinuses. Was just reading that a person with abcessed tooth, symptomless, broke into sinus cavity, infection was then serious, discovered on a scan. No symptoms in the sinus cavity!
Maybe you are one of us, the sensitive sinus-types. I am one of "us" because I dread my dH getting that knocked down by a sinus infection that I have become hypervigilant if he gets a headache.
So, I am sharing this with you, again.
Feel better soon!
Myself, shopping for cabbage next.
Golden,
Yes, I did feel a bit better, a little sunshine helped. But the rain will be returning,
and I have to lean on dH's arm to get where I am going (to the car and back).
It hurts really bad, as if this is it, how it's going to be. But of course, I will be fighting this, looking up fibromyalgia treatments again. It does hurt worse after having to lie down missing out on a whole day or two. The minute I do feel better, I over-exert to catch up on cleaning-then things hurt worse in so many different places. It even hurts to lie down and rest. Like I said, I will fight this. Maybe start some liquid Turmeric by Cunol.
I truly think the sinus thing started when I started
a new antidepressant. I've read that some people can
be susceptible to sinus problems when taking them. I've
been off of it for a few weeks now but maybe it takes a
while to leave your system.
Unfortunately I don't have a lot of faith in my doctor. I'm
on the waiting list for a new one. But meanwhile I guess I'll
hope and pray he comes through for me this time.
Gershun - Have you been checked for allergies? My food allergies have gotten worse over the years. Sudafed etc. do only help temporarily and you can't stay on them for very long There are bacterial infections, and also fungal nasal infections which antibiotics won't help. Hope your doc figures it out.
Nacy - if your friend has PBA she may not be able to control her laughter and tears. I understand is must be disconcerting to be with her. It also must be pretty awful to have that condition.
So very sad when others can not extend grace in situations that are no fault of the person with the issue.
Gershun, cooked cabbage is a SUPER FOOD for sinuses.
I like to heat a nice broth and put some cut cabbage in it. Stays crisp but is cooked and always makes my sinuses and DH feel better.
Just some more information that might be beneficial to you.
Has always helped me feel better from the inflammation. I usually reheat the compress like 3 or 4 times, yummy feeling to have that hot, moist rag on painful sinuses.
I pray you have nothing serious. Get well soon!
Golden, I did take a sudafed today. I find these things help
temporarily.
Anabanana, I just recently had a bunch of dental work done
so I doubt it's teeth related but I do hear you about how tooth
pain can be mistaken for sinus pain.
Anxiety, I do have one of those rice bag things. I might drag it out.
One weird side effect of this whole sinus thing is it's been making
my eyes twitch. Really irritating. I'm hoping my doc comes through
for me. Even though I don't have anything coming out of my nose
I'm wondering if a course of antibiotics may help?
Weirdly, I think this whole thing started as a side effect of an
antidepressant I was prescribed. I've heard sinus problems can be
a rare side effect. I stopped taking it about 6 weeks ago but I
hear it can take a while for antidepressants to release from your
brain receptors.
But thx for your feedback everyone. You guys always come through.
I take Zyrtec ( OTC antihistamine ) every morning and Singulair ( which is a prescription ) every night . I also use an air purifier in my bedroom at night and in the opposite corner of the bedroom I use a humidifier in winter also . Occasionally I take Motrin for sinus pain .
Be careful about long term use of decongestants . Using them too long can cause rebound congestion , even worse than the original congestion .
One time the doctor prescribed a steroid sinus rinse. I had to prepare it in a nasal spray bottle. It involved opening capsules and dissolving the powder in distilled water that was alittle warmer than room temperature.
nacy - good if you can enjoy the snow - from inside!!! It's snowing here again. Lots of snow. R's trailer got stuck in a field so he left it there. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day and he can get it out..
gershun - I'm sorry I know they can be very painful. Have you tried antihistamines? I never found the steroid spray helped me, but antihistamines and decongestants do. It has been shown that phenylephrine as in Tylenol sinus, doesn't work but pseudoephedrine does so you might look for an OTC med that has pseudoephedrine. There are a few such as SUDAFED® Maximum Strength Sinus Congestion.
I am on an antihistamine daily, and take a sudafed if I get a more stuffy nose and it helps,
I'm not blowing any snot. It's just sinus pressure.
I can't see my doc till Thursday. Anyone? Help!
A little bit is good.
My plants got watered,
the air is cleaned.
The day before the rain, there was so much all over pain in my body.
Now I recall there is something universal about that. People predicting rain
by their body pain?
Now I am going back to sleep.
My body has a schedule of its own.
Not always when I want to wake or sleep.
And that is changing.
Yesterday I did not wake up again until 11:00 a.m.
I want to do so much, but need to wait to feel better again.
Mal de debarquement syndrome (MdDS), or disembarkment syndrome is a neurological condition usually occurring after a cruise, aircraft flight, or other sustained motion event.
It could be that is why you feel 'weird' after your cruise.
Maybe your doctor can help you feel better and give you a reasonable diagnosis.
Many people, when faced with a vacation, will get sick before going. That part is a psychological illness.
If you are not feeling yourself, see a doctor.
cw - you said it well. Acceptance so changes our perspective.
psue - glad this was comforting to you. None of us can stop the ravages of disease or aging.
way - self preservation - absolutely!!! A lot of what I did or didn't do re mother was about self preservation.
hothouse - Yes!! Worrying doesn't change or fix things, but it hurts us. Giving up what one can't control is liberating. It is what it is.
The old serenity prayer is still a good one:
“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”
I'll add "peace once I have figured it out". 🕊
I worried when I got these calls at first but after awhile I realized that there was not a damn thing I could do about it. If my mother wanted to go into the basement of her house, then that is what she was going to do. There was no controlling it. I wasn't her jailer.
I just gave it up to the gods and I became very fatalistic. Something was going to happen, it could be a fall in the basement or something equally miserable would that radically changed her trajectory. She had 94 good years and she wasn't going to live forever. That's just how it is.
My body is operating on DST, I'm waking up well before 6 and nodding off before 10, I'm looking to changing the clock so I'm back in sync with everyone else.

There is a fresh Daffodil popped out of the ground with ready to bloom buds.
There are some sunny days, and more to come.
It is Spring to me.
cw - snowing here too the last few days Ugh!!!
nacy - minus 27 F (-34C) here at night a few nights, with minus 11F (-24C) in the daytime Going up in few days thankfully. I'm happy to stay indoors.
itrr - Oh my goodness - that's a hot summer day for us. I'm OK till about 83 F then I'm done.
I can not imagine living in fridgid weather, hats off to all of you that can and do. Brrrr!
