Mom has been in and out of rehab and hospitals over the last 6 months because of falls. When she fell 6 months ago, she had Mild Cognitive Impairment. The SNF she is now in (for rehab) tells me that she is extremely combative, screams often and has full-blown dementia. Each time she goes into a different place they change her meds.Today was the worst I've seen her in several weeks. The p.a. and nurses refuse to address the trigger and want to keep pumping more meds into her. They have her on an antipsychotic which I have been told by 3 doctors (2 geriatric, 1 who works in nursing homes)should not be given to dementia patients. I want to get her into a dedicated Memory Care Unit but nobody will accept her Medicaid without 2-years of private pay. I do not have the additional $6000 needed on top of her contribution. She technically already lives in an Assisted Living and they have a Memory Care Unit but I'm not happy with the medical care there - they refused to give her a urine test when I said she needed one....she then ended up back in the hospital after falling and hallucinating due to an UTI. What can I do to get her the care she needs?
I would keep searching. And perhaps call your local Area Agency on Aging or Senior Services to see if they can help better direct you.
