worriedinCA - just thinking about your situation with the totaled car and the insurance. Do you know how much the insurance will pay you for the car? And how soon you will get the check?

My insurance paid for the rental car for up to two weeks (I think), and they were pretty quick in processing the claim. I got the check before I had to return the rental.

Hi Polar. Geico paid us $24.7k! A lot more than I expected but then again I’ve never totaled a car until now. I thought they might pay us what it would cost to go out and buy the same car used, and the ones I saw were going for $14-$15k but had a lot more miles than my car. My car was 2.5 years old and had 19k miles on it, perfect condition except for the mirror that was busted 2 weeks prior to the accident. Blue book value was only $18k according to my husband. So I am pretty happy with Geico! We don’t have rental coverage on our policy so no rental for me but it’s ok because I am driving hubby’s beater car. We signed over the title & got the check on Thursday 10/24. We have decided to hold off on buying a new car, with 2 kids that are only going to get bigger & one of whom is already my size, we really need a full size car and we’ve decided to get a Chevy Tahoe. My husband will get his vacation buy-back check in mid February (that is where the city buys back all his vacation hours over 600hrs, he usually has 730-750 hours so we get a fat check every February!) and we will be able to buy a new Tahoe outright & not have a car payment so.....I gotta drive the ‘ol beater for 4 months which stinks but that’s what I get for wrecking my car!

Woohoo!!! worriedinCA, happy that you got more than expected from the insurance. A brand new paid off Tahoe sounds awesome, well worth the wait. No car payment is the way to go. Hope you get a good deal.

Cali,

Well, it’s an unexpected way to get a new vehicle. There is your silver lining.

I still say and I know you do too. I’m just glad that no one was hurt. That’s what’s most important. The rest is just an inconvenience which is simply part of life. A pain, but we all go through pain and hurt in our lives.

Sometimes bad things that happen end up being blessings in disguise.

Spoke to my brother briefly yesterday when I called my parents house to run something by my mom. They were supposed to drive to Vegas today but brother said they left yesterday & were going to drive half way. Now here’s where I get mad! He said he had just called them to ask if he should go gamble at the casino because he had a dream he won almost $10k!

What in the what? He’s 35 years old and hasn’t worked since he was like 22 (and only for a year!).....if he has money to gamble with, it means my mom is STILL giving him money every time she goes out of town! I realize it’s her money but I have tried to get her to stop giving him CASH! He is an unemployed alcoholic and why she gives him cash I will never understand! He does not go anywhere, he doesn’t have any friends. He doesn’t have a job to go to. Is it any surprise he continually falls off the wagon? Giving him cash means he can go across the highway to the mini mart & buy alcohol! When I asked her why she does that (and she always leaves him at least $100), she said it’s so he can eat. I’ve told her that she can always stock the kitchen before she leaves! She can even make meals and freeze them for him if she’s that worried! He does most of the cooking these days so it’s not like he won’t cook for himself. But she won’t do it. She just gives him cash!

And then this gambling thing? Calling the parents to ask if he should go blow the money at the casino? What in the hell? All I can say is......must be nice. And then again if he blows it at the casino, he can’t go to the store & buy beer with it.

It is just frustrating seeing him get a free ride all these years. I am blown away at the enabling that goes on year after year.......really just chaps my hide sometimes! And to hear how he treats my parents?

NHWM, above all yes I am thankful no one was hurt! And you’re right there’s definitely a silver lining here. Now that I am over the shock and have come to terms with totaling by MILs car, I can bring myself to say that....even though it had sentimental value, the silver lining is, we can get an SUV now. I bring myself to say that neither of us were too fond of the Honda, don’t get me wrong it’s a very nice car but it’s not the model either of us would have bought. The whole interior is black and attracted dust and animal hair like a magnet! No dog ever touched the inside of that car but there was hair all over it! I would have it fully detailed and 2 days later, there was lint and hair everywhere! I am not even sure why my MIL went with the “sport version”. It had cloth seats, a slow 4cyl engine and no navigation. For someone who planned to drive it on her weekend jaunts to various cities, she should gone with the touring edition which has leather & a navigation system! What I disliked the most about the car was the sensors, if you got too close to another car, the car beeped and a message saying “BRAKE” flashed on the dashboard. I mean, good feature to have because the brakes would slam on automatically if you didn’t brake in time but a few times, I wasn’t too close to another car and didn’t need to brake yet the sensor made the brakes slam on and the car stopped in traffic and of course when the brakes slam on, you are thrown forward.

Thanks Polar! Me too. I would be happy with a used 2018-2019 model but we haven’t been able to find one with low miles. All the used 2019s have 40k + miles!

send, I hope that woman will be alright! These fires are bad. I am in the middle of the SoCal and the Bay Area fires so the air quality here is terrible as we are getting smoke from both ends! Very thankful we are safe from the fires but the smoke is really messing with me! I can only imagine how bad it is for people with lung issues. I think all this smoke the reason my son’s eyes have been red and itchy the last few days too.

Send,

So awful about the fires. Natural disasters are horrible. I will pray. Many people are sending good thoughts and prayers your way. 💗

Years ago, a woman that I worked with experienced a terrible house fire. I don’t remember how the fire started. Her house burned to the ground! Everyone collected clothes from their kids that wore the same size and gave to her. We took up a collection for her. She was a single mom.

I did not have children yet so I donated cash and went to the store and bought other items such as new towels, kitchen supplies and other household items that she said she needed desperately.

It was heartbreaking to see her start over in life. She had three beautiful children.

Another time I worked with a woman who accidentally left a candle burning and her cat knocked it over.

All it takes is an unattended candle to start an awful fire. She was in the kitchen and smelled the fire. She ran out of the house. She had damage but the fire department was able to put it out and repairs could be done.

Both cases no one was hurt, thank God!

Not really I whine moment I suppose.....but today is the 2nd day in a row where I walked out of the house to run errands & saw police cars at the home of an elderly neighbor that passed away at the beginning of October. Yesterday I saw 2 officers standing near the front door talking to a man who was at least in his 60s. Today I come out and there are 4 cop cars and 2 officers standing in the front yard while the same man I saw yesterday was coming out of the house with arms full of stuff that he put in to the back of a car. He was saying something to the officers but they didn’t appear to engage him back. My husband was home for lunch so I walked back inside and told him there were 4 police cars at the neighbors house again today and he said “yeah the people there can’t seem to get along”. Which confirms my suspicious that the 2 officers outside were providing a civil standby while the older man got his his stuff and left. I don’t know who those people are? The homeowner died at 93 early this morning, in her home. Her adult children and grandchild all live overseas in Germany and France. After the funeral, I noticed an old white Chevy truck under the carport I hadn’t noticed before. I had seen female caregivers in scrubs outside the house a few times over the last year too. But it never appeared anyone but the one lady lived there. Having read all the stories on this board, I can’t help but wonder if other family such nephews or something moved in after she died and now they are fighting? It’s just kind of weird. Honestly until she died, it didn’t really look like anyone lived there, I never saw visitors or anything. Whatever is going on, I hope the family isn’t torn apart over it.

Official whine moment: I HATE the smell of weed. Weed as in pot, marijuana. One of my neighbors goes out back & smokes it every night at about this time (9pm). More power to them, I just wish the smell wasn’t so strong....and so bad. I usually have the slider in the living room open because my daughters cat likes to go out back at this time of night and do...cat things. he’s too fat to jump the fence and won’t go out there during the day but as soon as it gets dark, he wants out so I let him out. I like to keep the slider open a few inches so I can hear him when he’s ready to come in but the smell of marijuana is too strong for my liking so I have to keep it closed now.

Out of curiousity does anyone here hate the smell too? My husband likes it and can’t wait until he’s retired so he can smoke it every day. SMDH. I could care less if he smokes it, I just don’t want to smell it :(

Oh my gosh, Cali. Don’t come to our Jazz and Heritage festival! Hahaha

Sorry, the first thing I thought of. I don’t partake but I am a music lover. There is always a joint floating around. No, make that a bazillion joints being passed back and forth. Live and let live.

People who smoke pot are very chilled out. They aren’t obnoxious like the drunks! Not everyone is a ‘happy’ drunk. It’s the other drugs that are horrible, meth, crack. and so forth. The potheads don’t bother me.

I wish it were legal everywhere, tax it. Our streets have giant potholes. Hahaha problem is that we have really crappy, corrupt politicians here that line their pockets with the money. Quite a few went to jail or in jail now.

We had an art teacher that smoked everyday in the parking lot before class. He reeked of weed when he came in the class.

You know which scent I hated as a kid. Patchouli oil! That stinks more than pot. My husband can’t stand the smell of cabbage! He tells me to only cook it if he is out of town.

Ugh NHWM, I hate the smell of weed and cabbage both! I also can't stand the smell of cigars. It's weird because I smoke cigarettes and that smell doesn't bother me, never has. I have gone periods of time where I quit though and I could smell the cigarettes on my coat, purse, etc.

Frazzled,

I get it. I know some people who won’t go to fest because there is so much weed floating around in the air.

Hate cigars but some pipe tobacco smells nice. Guess it’s sentimental to me. My godfather smoked a pipe.

Same with weed. Cheap crap smells awful.

Some people hate cigarette smell. Others don’t mind. Yeah, I think people get immune to smells.

I remember being super super sensitive to certain smells when I was pregnant. Was horrible! I couldn’t eat or drink certain food being pregnant. I got sick if I smelled it.

I was able to quit smoking when I was pregnant, I think being sensitive to the smell definitely helped. Certain things would just make me really queasy too. I also had motion sickness, which I normally don't have, but sometimes riding in a car, particularly on hard stops or sharp turns, made me nauseous.

Frazzled,

Yeah, I know several people that quit smoking when pregnant because of the baby. As much of a caffeine junkie as I am. I stopped coffee when pregnant.

I can’t read in the car. I will get motion sickness. Remember before GPS, smart phones and the internet, my husband would ask me to read a map on road trips and I would get sick.

I can't remember the smell of the weed people smoked back in my younger years as being unpleasant but some of the strains that are available now are downright nasty - one good thing about legal pot is that you have an ability to choose a different variety if the smell or flavour is offensive.

Cwillie, the weed I am smelling every night these days doesn’t always smell the same. It usually kind of smells like a skunk. Last night it wasn’t that variety. I am kind of surprised that seeing as how this is a residential area with houses and backyards...the smell is strong enough that neighbors inside their house can smell it.

Needhelp, weed isn’t legal in your state is it? I hope the cops are lax when it comes to weed LOL. I always cringe when watching Live PD and people get busted for a little weed. What a waste of time and resources. I’ll make sure I avoid that festival when I finally do make it out to N.O Haha!

I also absolutely can’t stand the smell of cigarettes. I will take weed over cigs every day. I do kind of like the smell of cigars though....But cigs are downright nasty and I can’t believe people still smoke them these days knowing how bad they are! I’m happy none of the neighbors seem to smoke cigs.

Cali,

Weed isn’t legal here but no one cares at jazz fest. We have such high numbers attending the fest. The fest makes a ton of money so the city makes money from locals and tourists. Cops turn their heads during jazz fest.

Very good suggestion, cw. I will get them spayed and they will have the obligatory vaccinations, but nothing extra. It seems as in human medicine, there are so many more "extras" now at the vet than there used to be.
