I agree with Alva and lealonnie1
(I always seem to agree with both Alva and lealonnie1).

Your mother needs to be living in an in-patient facility asap.

I checked out Google reviews for the Kaiser Permanente located in Modesto. There were 915 google reviews specifically for the Modesto facility - and almost every single review of the 915 were 5 star reviews. Google reviews are generally quite reliable, IMO. I'm not negating your experience at Modesto KP, but there seems to be some big disconnect involved with your perception of the quality of care she's getting there.

Your next steps -

to get POA for mom if possible.

Get her admitted into a facility that she can afford, If there's an issue with affordability, consult with an Elder Care attorney immediately to expedite this process.

About 90% of mom's current safety and lack daily care would be solved very quickly when she's admitted into a facility..

She should not be on her own, and you shouldn't be pulling out your hair with frantic knee jerk reactions, although I empathize.

Mom's house needs to be sold asap to help pay for her in-patient care - this is another issue to discuss with a California Elder Law Attorney if your mom needs to go on Medicaid - because the proceeds of the house sale could be hard to overcome for Medicaid eligibility, unless you handle this in advance with legal advice.

Good luck.

That's a lot of info but no specific question. "Advice please." is way too vague.

"Adult Kids don't care nor understand that their once very high functioning Mom is unable to do for herself"

Once someone enters Conspiracy Theory Land it then becomes far more difficult to help such a person. Sometimes the reality is that in places in the US the healthcare system is very overtaxed and/or broken. "Good" and "poor" are both subjective measures.

Who are you in relationship to this woman?

You know a lot of her personal info... are you not able to help her, either? If so I'm not sure what you think a global forum of anonymous people can do, other than suggest she contact social services for her county or you report her to APS to get her on their radar as a vulnerable elder.

Does she have a PoA assigned? If not, she needs to do this, otherwise she WILL eventually be given a third-party court-assigned legal guardian.

Why not sell her house so she can afford a better facility? Then she doesn't need to take care of it or pay for upkeep. I think she has solutions, she just needs to accept what they are. I hope she finds someone local to help her and that she gets the appropriate care that she desperately needs.

I agree with Alva. Kaiser saved my life in 2023 and my husband's life on 3 separate occasions, literally. We'd both be dead by our mid 60s if not for the care and diligence Kaiser doctors have shown us. I'm sorry you're finding a different situation for your mother.

Perhaps it's time for one of the adult children to visit mom now and help her with all these matters she's unable to handle herself. You cannot expect neighbors to handle her overgrown yard, no matter how good a part of the city she's been over the years. Nor can you expect her to handle in home care herself, or dealing with fears of going into long term care. Taking prescription Alprazolam for 12 years ALONE is a recipe for disaster! She may need help and a schedule to wean off of that drug. Even though I have an Rx for that med, I don't use it and turned my bottle into the folks who run the drug take back program.

I helped my parents for 10+ years after moving them from Fl to Colo to be near me in their old age. They never would've been able to figure out care on their own, or how to get to doctors, or the other 100,000 problems they encountered medically, and financially. I got them into Independent Senior Living, then Assisted Living, then Memory Care Assisted Living for my mother. I saw them thru all the hospitalizations, rehabs, surgeries, cancers, dementia, doctors, etc. I didn't expect them to do it alone, that would have been impossible. They needed help and guidance every step of the way, and they needed an advocate to be their voice when things went wrong.

You can click on the Find Care tab on top of this page and ask the A Place For Mom folks to help you find caregiving options for your mother. They deal with Assisted Living facilities all over California and I'm sure CAN find a good one for your mother. Or in home caregivers to assist her at home, which is another option.

Good luck to you.

In my humble opinion as an RN many years, and having worked in other systems and now a Kaiser Permanente member since retirement 20 years ago this is one of the most dedicated and efficient and caring system in the entire United States.
Again, just my humble opinion.

It is clear that your beloved 83 year old mom needs now to be in care.
Modesto and surrounds in the Valley is a thriving metropolis at this point, and it's difficult for me to believe that you cannot find care as adequate as any care that's available, and at certainly a better cost than my own bay area.
I do want to suggest that you be certain to explore Board and Care. Getting now as rare as hen's teeth, but often a much more dedicated and loving family atmosphere (to say nothing of tastier food as more the norm).

There are a tremendous number of problems extant in your post to us, not least of which is something that looks like chronic family dissention.
Your post seems to be full of distrust/dislike for systems of medical care in the area.
Be assured all on Forum sympathize with how difficult and costly it is to get good care. The aging process to say nothing of illness is fraught with dissatisfaction, with imperfection, with things that simply cannot be fixed.

As you can imagine, we here don't have an answer for your individual problem in your individual area, and as someone dealing now with Kaiser for a life threatening illness, and having them offering me so much that I am finding them a bit "pesty" for want of a better word, if you cannot thrive in the Kaiser system, I despair.

I wish I had more for you. I simply do not. I recognize your desperation. I can only wish you the best of luck and tell you to keep contact with social services.
