Find Care & Housing

Hey, Gershun here again. Well, I've got a new story for you. Just happened. I was making rice a roni. I combined the rice vermicelli mix with the butter and was waiting for the rice to brown. There I was stirring away for about 10 min not really thinking, then suddenly the kettle on the opposite burner started whistling. NEWSFLASH, I had the wrong burner on. The funny thing is I probably would have stood there another 10 min before I realized.

And I'm only 57. No dementia here................I hope. :P

Hello Overthehill. I'm not a nurse, but it sounds as if she could be in the first stages of dementia, especially as there was nothing actually in the pot. If she'd been cooking a steak and left it burning to do something else, perhaps that could be construed as forgetfulness. My Mother was doing similar things. I had smoke alarms installed throughout the house, bought a small oven that turns off automatically and only works on a timer, plus she uses her microwave as well. I asked her not to use the stove anymore as the heat is too fierce, but if it happens again I'll turn it off at the mains. She has a small electric frypan where the temperature is more regulated and she's been using that without mishaps so far. I also found an alarm for the sink as she occasionally would leave the taps running. I hope your poor lady's okay.

"cooking on the stove but nothing in the pot"--that could describe quite well the minds of some people I've met, and I'm NOT referring to people suffering from dementia! (Sorry, but this just struck me as a potential "expression", and I believe we all could use a bit of levity from time to time!)
