Hi we have to move my mom to assisted living . She used to bed from hospice with side rails at home now and has in home help . They said she needs to get a mattress with bolsters or a scoop mattress from hospice to prevent falls but I don’t like the idea of her feeling trapped in bed and couldn’t get out with help of her companion if she wanted to . Anyone have experience with either of these beds or suggestions . The facility said she can’t use. Bed with side rails due to fear of entrapment . Thanks

Hospice brought mom a bolster topper for her bed immediately bc she was prone to falling out of bed all the time while in Memory Care Assisted Living. She was certainly not "trapped" in the bed by any means, but the bolster cupped her so that falling out became harder to do, that's all. She still managed TO fall out of bed a couple of times anyway, but it was nothing like it was w/o the bolster. Don't imagine some kind of contraption that's going to keep her a prisoner in bed.....its nothing like that. Consider it a deterrent.

Please discuss this with Hospice they can get the bed that the facility is asking for.

I am a bit confused.... You say mom had a bed with rails when she was in home.... but you are concerned that a mattress with a bolster or a scoop would make her feel trapped.... I would think the rails would have made her feel trapped as again she also could not get out of bed without assistance.

I imagine anyone who is a side sleeper or that moves around in bed even slightly would feel confined in a bed that essentially traps you in a narrow groove, single beds already would seem small if you've been used to sleeping in a full, queen or king.
