The nursing home has been sending me a bill for $2,000.00 for my husband's care. He died in March and they say I have to pay. He did have Medicaid between the time he was there for rehab and the time he was admitted to home there was a couple of days where medical didnot pay nursing said they were co-pays from Medicare. I was told in NJ I am responsible for the bill. Not fair I didn’t receive the care he did shy should I have to pay?

Medicare pays 100% for only 20 days. After that, 80 to 100 days 50%. That means the other 50% is paid by the patient or the supplimental. In your instance, you needed to apply for Medicaid. I am surprised payment was not retro active.

You need to get a break down of the billing to see what is exactly going on. You can call Medicaid and ask why they did not cover all the days that needed to be paid for.

Who signed the admitting paperwork. Did you sign as POA using using POA? Did you sign as the party financially responsible for payment? Without that POA at the end of your name, you are responsible for the bill. You can set up a payment plan with the NH. Paying so much a month.

freqflyer is right.

NH would submit a claim against the estate before the time to do so runs out.

Interesting the bill would be $2k for only 2 days?

Chicks11, sounds like there was a gap time between Medicare ended and when Medicaid started, that would be the responsibly of your husband's estate to pay.
