Anyone using Coconut Oil for Dementia/Alzheimers?

I recently read about the use of virgin Coconut Oil for dementia/Alzheimers and wondered if anyone on this list was trying it?

I read an article about Dr. Mary Newport who used it on her husband with remarkable results. She put a couple of tablespoons in his oatmeal and saw results within weeks.(You can a find a link to the article in the Tampa Bay News by googling Dr. Mary Newport.)

I also read about coconut oil for dementia in Dr. Gott's column although he wouldn't recommend it.

I've reviewed Dr. Newports articles (she sent some to me and I thought it was all very interesting). From my perspective, what is there to lose? I'd sure try it. It doesn't mean you can't go the conventional route, as well.

I am trying it, first with coconut "oil" (which is solid a room temp) in her smoothies, and now MCT oil (Now brand, tastes neutral to me). I think she did have an up blip when I first started the coconut oil. Been on the MCT only a few days. Will look into adding the DHA Omega 3, but hard to get pills down her at this point. (Though she's better than she was a month ago.)

Now problem with being cold all the time, even though it's hot. Read somewhere that coconut oil is good for that, so am poking around researching again. Know somewhere on this list, someone had a thread about their parents always being cold. Thyroid? poor circulation? Or maybe she can't tell the diff between actual cold and the sensation of a breeze...

I used this with my husband for months. It did not seem to help him at all. To us, it was a waste of money. I've also tried several other things that have been sent to me by well meaning friends and NOTHING has changed. The Exelon Patch has, so far, been the best for him. I can really tell when he has not used it. Though I try keeping up with his medications, sometimes I forget. I am VERY interested in the Alzheimer's dogs. I have NO plans on putting him in a home unless he becomes violent. With this dog, hopefully that will not happen. My daughter's little dog was with us about 15 days and she helped him a lot. I am of the opinion a dog might be his best bet right now. And it won't hurt my feelings one bit since I've loved and owned them all my life. Thanks. Blessings to you all.

I do all my frying with it, especially eggs. It's also great for deep frying if you keep the oil at or below 350. It doesn't break down like unsaturated fats do.

The coconut oil goes along well with the marguerita, summer sun "vibe" too.

Coconut oil can be kept for at least 2 years without it going rancid. I do refrigerate some because I love the taste of the hard stuff. It's the consistancy of cold chocolate.
There are a lot of coconut oil smoothy recipes on the internet. Just google it. Try to get the organic extra virgin oil for the best food value. The things they use in processing the other stuff can be unhealthy and never tastes as good.

Cut back any statin drugs. Your brain needs cholesterol to maintain itself properly. Your body needs cholesterol to make Vitamin D and assimilate calcium. Over the long term statins attack the liver and the brain. The saturated fats in coconut flakes are good for you in MODERATION. Never go hog wild with any supplement.
