My mother is bed-ridden. How do we find recommendations regarding external female catheters? Thanks

I have to agree with KelleyBean. My mother has been bedridden since 2005. I have her at home with me. Home health has been a lot of help but she had urinary tract infections constantly with the catheter so we finally took it out permanently. Diapers are not that ideal either but it is much better for her. If you do decide on diapers, one of the major issues is diaper rash. It can cause major problems if not taken care of promply. My mother has never had diaper rash or bed sores because each time she is changed, we wash her with warm water and mild soap and rinse well. Hope this helps, good luck and stay strong..

In todays day and age, the healthcare system is trying to cut out catheters except in extreme circumstances. Not only do they cause discomfort, but have to be cleaned regularly due to high cases of infection. Even in hospitals, they try to keep the amount of time on caths to a minimum. Unfortunately, there really are no good external caths for women, a few have been tested, but none are very successful. Your best bet is to stick to adult diapers.

Best Wishes
