Is there a way to get paid to stay home with your elderly mother?

My husband and I are moving in with my 87 year old mother who can no longer live alone. I no longer work. We will be living in 3 rooms. The rooms are an extension to the house that was built in the 60's. The rooms have to be repaired, painted, and carpeted Since her house was not air conditioned we just had central A/C put in. We had to have two units put in. One for the main house and one for the addition. So far we are in debt for $19,000. Since the house was built in the 60's I am sure repairs/work will have to be done as they come along.

Is there a place we can go to get some financial help? I live in Richmond, VA.
