Congestive heart failure - my mother in law passed from it about four years ago. In her case, we anticipated some kind of decline but hers came on quickly. She reported an in ability to "breath deeply" - it meant her lungs were beginning to fill with fluid and limited her ability to breath and absorb oxygen. We took her to the ER and she was admitted, she became less and less aware as her lungs continued to fill and she passed away in her sleep.
To understand what to expect and WHEN it might happen, you really need to speak with the doctor of the CHF patient to understand what might happen. For general information, it might be helpful to speak with hospice nurses since they've probably seen many patients with the same condition.
