How do I deal with being burned out when there's no family or friends to rely on for help?

cant afford to bring in outside help

Hi Isobelle -
This is a difficult situation, one which I find myself to be in as well. Although I do have family members nearby they offer no assistance whatsoever. There are good days and then there are bad days. I am still, after 3 years of caring for my Father, trying to come to terms with the fact that no one will help and why.
The main concern here is that you take care of yourself. If you fall you will be no good to yourself or anyone else for that matter. Try to do nice things for yourself - treat yourself good. Wrap up with a good book. Pray. Meditate. Sit outside in the sun (even for a few minutes-this helps me), and soak up the rays. How refreshing. It may be difficult at times, but try to think positive and know that there are no accidents - that you are where you are supposed to be - for whatever reason.
Take this time to get to really know your loved one, not as mom or dad, but the person. You may be surprised.
I wish you all the luck with such a difficult job and I wish you well.

Isobelle, this site helps me. Even if I don't start posts, knowing that others face challenges also with grace and courage even while we gripe/whine - makes a difference. Get sleep when you can; sneak a book with you into the bathroom; hug a pet if you have one; find a stupid rerun with romance, bad jokes, or action heroes with studly muscles; perhaps take a shower. We have a running joke about tile therapy in our home - if it's bad enough, I run loud water and pound wall or scream undercover. Some days I just run out of good. Some local areas have support groups if you can get out, but online is there 24/7. Take care, Helen
