That depends on her other assets. She will be expected to pay out of pocket until most of her money is gone. There may be a way to keep the house - you'd have to check with the state of residence - but likely if she goes on Medicaid, Medicaid will put a lien against the house, so when she dies they will own all or part of it anyway. You should probably check with an elder law attorney or an estate attorney, as every state is a little different. Good luck, Carol
You probably cannot keep the whole house and put her in a fulltime nursing home. Unless you set things up at least 5 years ago, such as putting her house in a trust or in one of her children's names.
Then, that doesn't count the house as an asset, and she may not qualify for a first-rate nursing home or assissted living. No one said it was easy. I am going through the same thing. The most my mom would agree to is to put half her house in my name.
Yes, buttons, they can. I assume that your father has passed. BUT. If one of you lived with her for 2 years before she went into the NH, and your care kept her out of the NH for some time, that person may be able to keep the house.
Go to your local Area Council on Aging, and they can answer a lot of your questions. Good luck.
