My mother wakes up at least 5-8 times a night and must be assisted. What can be done for night time incontinence?

I am just worn out from getting up and down all night long. She does not remember which is good for her, but her days are getting worse because she does not sleep. Is there ANYTHING that can help this condition so she and my husband and I can get good nights sleep. We are truly getting sleep deprivation and it is wearing on us. Anyone out there had any help in this area that helps the person? She has dementia also, so she not only gets up alot, she has delusions and hallucinations. Just need some help in getting her help for sleep and the incontinence at night. Any ideas or help that anyone knows of? Doctor has her on the highest dose of detrol, but to no avail. Please advice if you have had success. Thank you and God Bless.

This is temporary and does not need a catheter. I have gone through this with my mother and you can stop it immediately with mannose powder .... Give that every 2 hours for a day and then taper off and the incontinence gets less and less. There are lots of things that can be done for this situation because it could be a result of many different things but typically weak muscles and irritated bladder and a need for better hydration and better healthier bacteria populating her digestive and elimination systems. Look up words like Microbiota and gut microbia, asymptomatic bladder infection, colonization... flora, etc.. You can make the urinary system healthier and the incontinence will stop. There are other things that can also stop the incontinence like tea called Pao D'arco.. You have to take health in your own hands and try things out. Antibiotics strips the healthy bacteria out of the mucous linging of the bladder and makes it susceptible for bad bacteria to attach itself to the lining./.... SO you have to populate the mucous lining with other strains of bacteria to combat the ecoli or the other bacteria... ( there is more accurate info on this than what I am describing here so don't take my word for it... Do your own research).

I think this will kill you if you try to keep this up. Good grief I would give her an ounce of wine and if she won't drink it, I would.

Dementia-like symptoms can certainly be caused by UTIs, and a UTI can make symptoms worse in a person with dementia. But 50% of Alzheimer's really being UTIs? No. There are not THAT many incompetent doctors in this country.

The dementia is caused by symptomless UTI (urinary tract infection) my mom use to pee all night when she tests positive for UTI as well as when she doesn't have a bowel movement. I've read that 50% of Alzheimer's and Dementia cases are really just confusion from UTI. My mom only pees at night now if she has dinner or drinks after 6 pm ..... What a relief and the dementia is going away..

When my husband was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia 8 years ago the number one problem that could have prevented me from keeping him at home was his inability to sleep through the night. You can't be a caregiver if you are a zombie and as you know it doesn't hep the person with dementia to be sleep deprived on top of everything else. Seroquel was the answer for us. (The sleep specialist tried melatonin first. If that works, great. If not, move on to another solution. This is serious and needs to be resolved.) A doctor who specializes in sleep disorders and/or a specialist who deals day in and day out with dementia can be extremely helpful. Good luck to you all.

Convince doctor to put a foley catheter in. With the foley plug during the daytime, her bladder can be retrained to urinate once ever 2 - 3 hours. In time she will need to urinate every 4 hours. In the interim, use briefs (adult diapers) and disposible bed pads at night until she doesn't have the urge to get up every hour. If PCP won't do cooperate, see a urologist. Detrol and all the other medications for incontinence has never worked for my Mom.

My Mom had hallucinations and was very distempered until we tried the medication Seroquel. 1/2 minimum dose works, unless she's waaayy out there and I give her the full pill.

Hope this helps you! -B
