How do I find assistance for low income apartment or housing for my wife and I?

My daughter has 5 children and even though she would like us to stay with her, I feel as I don't want to burden her. Besides my wife has Lupus, (advanvced) so she has tendencies to have siezures and I'm afraid that would bother the children, and my wife, likewise. We live in MD and I'm learning all about this system the hard way.

I would go to those complexes personally and ask about their availability. Sometimes people on waiting lists have chosen another place, etc. I always think showing up in person helps. Let them know about your dire situation. Can you live with family temporarily until something opens up? I hope so. What part of the country are you living in?

Thank you for your answers, we are in a ugly situation with our house because we had purchased it in 2007 and we put about 40 percent of our savings into the down payment. I thought I would be working until age 67 or 70, but then I was deemed disabled, my wife was already disabled for 10 years. Well we loved the house and kept making our mortgage payments with our savings, 401k, and then our stocks. When the money was running out our mortgage company would not work with us and grant us any modification. Now they want to foreclose and we need a place but our Hud program has told us there is a 2 and a half year wait in this county and it is very limited as to where we would have a choice of living. We have started looking in other counties but we won't be able to see the grandchildren very much. Our budget is quite limited but we will keep our faith and keep searching.

You can go to your state's website and look under "subsidized housing" or "HUD housing." They charge rent on a sliding scale according to your income and you have to qualify every year, which means paperwork. Also, look at the regular rents in your area. Sometimes gov. sub. housing is not a bargain. There are also "senior only" private apartments. Here is the link to HUD: http://www.hud.gov/apps/section8/
Have you thought about reverse mortgage - or is that not possible?

I may suggest that you contact you local Area on Aging and request a list of Low Income Housing. They should be able to give you the info on what pricing is as well as what it take to qualify. Does your State have any Mortage Assistence programs you can look into as well?
