i sponge bath my mother in law from her belly button to her knees every morning with soap and water and then finish with baby wipes and lavender scented baby powder that helps a great deal. also fabreeze plug ins in her bathroom and bedroom helps too.
I wonder if anyone has any experience with a sitz bath using baking soda? I know it works wonders on underarm odor and foot odor. Why wouldn't it help with the dreaded senior bottom odor? It keeps bacteria from growing, which is the cause of the type of body odor in moist places. Just a thought.
to answer the second part of your question it is normal. This is a hard task you have but the smell can also indicate other things. So when you change the diaper, use the wipes to wipe her up so she don't get rashes. also if you do see a rash , the best thing to use is baby diaper rash medicine. it is the same as the "Adult" ingrediants but so much more inexpensive. I uses desitine myself for my mom. She didn't wear diapers but I sure wish she had. I had to change her comode and clean alot of accidents and my mom was not tiny by any means. So I can understand how you may be feeling and some times it is ok to cry.
If getting her in the shower is a hassle there are "bathing wipes" that are microwavable and they do a great job. So inbetween her showers you can use those on her, or she can herself if able. They can be bought a Walgreens and are not that expensive. there is a variety of products available to assist caregivers for those smelly fussy times. If you really feel uncomfortable washing her up you can also use vinal or latex gloves on your hands.(it worked for me). they even sell those at a dollar store.
For the hair they do have no rinse shampoo that is such a blessing. You can get the expensive kind or even look online for more inexpensive kinds.
Now you are in the know you will be able to handle this if not on a daily than semi daily basis.
Some are worse than others. Some people just need to be washed down there on a daily basis. Then encourage her to use flushable wipes when ever she uses the toilet during the day.
