Both are entitlement programs. Medicare is like Jeannie said. Medicaid is a needs based joint federal & state entitlement program and about 70% of all nursing home or other long term care is paid by Medicaid. Some states have Medicaid waiver programs that pay for assisted living - this makes sense as AL is a lot less than a NH. You have to ask about to see what is available in your state. Good luck.
Medicare does not cover long-term-care. They may cover short-term rehab stays. So, no, Medicare does not cover assisted living or nursing home care (other than short visits) or any other long term residential care.
