How do you get your parent to eat more than a few bites?

Mom will eat three or four bites at a meal and say I am full. She then refuses to eat. Sometimes she will not even eat anything period.

seemeride has some good suggestions for you, burchan1. I am concerned about weight loss in my husband. If he's picked at his lunch, saying "It is good, I'm just not hungry," I take the plate away and then ask if he'd like an ice cream bar. His eyes light up. I buy the richest, highest calorie ice cream treats I can find for him.

He doesn't like Ensure or Boost, but enjoys them when I make a milkshake with them in the blender. (Nearly anything improves with ice cream, don't you think?)

Most elders change their eating habits as they age. Food may not seem as tasty from side effects of medicine, or they are on restricted diets that don't taste good. They don't move as much and don't require the same amount of intake. If weight is not an issue, then let it ride until such time as her doctor says the loss is enough. If loss of weight is a problem, have the doctor prescribe an appetite enhancer. I experienced the circle of dehydration, UTI, and antiobiotics when my mother was malnourished. Megese was prescribed, I cooked with more interesting spices, PUSHED FLUIDS, and was able to break the cycle. I also tried the ensure....didn't work as well unless you can find a flavor she likes. My mom craved sweet or tart.....seemed to break through the medicine taste, I guess. Protien was tough as she coulnd't seem to chew very well, but she ate eggs, tuna or egg salads, salmon patties. I hope you think this is helpful. Good luck.
