What is the process to move mom from Michigan to California into a nursing home?
Mom is 84 and I want to bring out to be by me and her 3 grandkids. She probably needs a nursing home, preferably in a Jewish community in Stockton, California.
Karen - You can do it but a BIG issue will be if you all will need Medicaid to pay for her NH will be IF she owns any property - like a home or other assets that are on the property rolls in Michigan (like a car). The home is viewed as exempt only if she remains living in that state and keeps a homestead exemption on the property. If she moved out of state, like to CA, home is not exempt and she would be private pay as long as the property is still owed by her. Remember if she sells it, all the proceeds from the home have to go 100% for her needs and her care and not gifted to others. You also will have to do other things to make a bonafide resident of CA - like move all bank accounts, voter registration etc.I'd contact Jewish Family Services or Hadassah to see if they have (& they likely will) have volunteers for elder issues to help. Good luck and next year in Jerusalem!
