Mom has no pharmacy prescription plan and she refuses to pay--what do I do?

She sounds like my Mom. Mom didn't sign up for Medicare Part D when she should have and now she is having a little issue with her heart. Decided to sign up at 82. She will be penalized. My attitude, "so what". I will sign up for this plan on time and if my mom was so stingy and foolish to not do so, she should pay a penality. I mean the rest of us are paying, why does my mom think she can have a free ride.

Maybe your mom needs a prescription for a med that costs her thousands of dollars to wake her up. Even with a penality it is cheaper than paying out of pocket.

I am sure you are frustrated by her actions, I know, I have been there. i just don't care anymore. Like they say, when you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences. Geezzzzzzzzzzzz

Did she not sign up for a Medicare drug plan when she signed up for her insurance plan that she currently has???? If she were to do so now, she would have to pay a monthly penalty plus the premium. Is she on original Medicare or an advantage plan????? If she's on original Medicare, they should have signed her up or at least asked her about the drug program. If she is not mentally incapacitated, there isn't much you can do about it. I read your wall and it just states general age related decline. A Power of Attorney is NOT binding without being notorized or witnessed. And I take it you were speaking of a Medical Power of Attorney???? Dept. of Aging won't do anything if she has the mental capacity, is able to make decisions for herself. If she had Alzheimer's or dementia and was a danger to herself or others or was not being cared for, which she is since she's in a NH, they can't do anything for her.
