What do I do when my father can't sign his dividend checks anymore?
My father has Parkinson's disease, and is having difficulty signing checks. My name is on the bank account so i can write the bills, but i can't sign the other checks he gets in the mail to deposit.
My bank lets me deposit checks to my mom's account just by writing "for deposit only" and the bank account number. I thought this was standard. But I agree that direct deposit would probably be easier all around.
Thanks guys, i need to check on the DOPA. There might be one already in place. We had paper work done when my mom died 5yrs ago, i just honestly don't remember because it wasn't really needed at the time.
I would do direct deposit. Most places prefer to do that now and he won't have to sign anything. This will be handy when he is unable to write at all. I would still get POA as Yogibear suggested so you will be able to conduct business as your father's agent.
You can ask him if he is willing to make you his Durable Power of Attorney. DPOA That way you can sign his checks that he receives. A DPOA can be very specific acts that you can do for him financially or very broad. You may want to look into an Elder Law attorney to assist you and your father.
