Is there a tax deduction for moving expenses for elderly when they move one state to another so that family can look after them?

Moving was a major expense for my 82 year old mother who moved from the Midwest to the Southwest so that I can look after her. She will be in her own apartment, but it is near my home. Will she be able to deduct any of the cost from this move?

Call the IRS after 4-15-13, and I am sure they will tell you.

Moving-expense deductions generally are job related and there are no long-distance deductions for medically related travel in IRS Publication 17, the basic rule book. You may be able to deduct care-giving costs and more, especially if you provide more than half her support.

Good question..I am wondering the same...my spouse. (Who has dementia) and i moved from upper east coast to Fla. To be near/live with our daughter for help. Being able to use the expenses deductable would really help....anxious to hear any responses to this?
