My dad has Parkinson's which causes him excessive drooling. I have bibs with waterproof backing but they get soaked. Any advice?
Is there any medication to stop the drooling? I can't keep up with the laundry. I have to use bleach and a brush to get the food stains and drool out...and eventually the bibs just wear out. Any suggestions?
Good Morning: You should give his doctor a call and ask him to prescribe him Transdermal Scopoline Patches. They are about the size of a dime and are placed just below the ear. (Picture is on the pack). You replace them every 3 days and the new one is then put on the opposite ear, and so on. The patch actually works to dry up the secretions your dad is having. I had them ordered for my Mom as well. Be patient, sometimes they tend to hold their saliva in their mouths because of trouble swallowing, but if you get the patches and start using them it will get better. Blessings to you.
my dad is just to the point where he always carries a hankerchief and wipes his mouth a lot, for meals we put a handtowel in his lap. Friends husband has the same thing and they put a large cloth bib/towel around his neck.
This may sound strange, but has your father had his thyroid checked recently? I know the drooling is part of the disease because my father has Parkinson's also, but his neurologist had said to us at one point that any irregularity in the thyroid will make the problem far worse. As for meds. that will help, my dad's PCP did give him something a while back that, I believe, was a medication for stomach ulcers, but which they said sometimes helped with the drooling--it didn't. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much help available in this area, but I would definitely call his neurologist to get some advice, if you haven't already. Good luck and God Bless.
