Any suggestions for hydrating father that has Alzheimer's?
My father has alzheimers and is living at home with my mother. Some days are good with liquid intake, some days not. Any suggestions and/or tips to getting more liquids into him. Thanks so much
We have the same experience with my Dad, who is still living at home with my Mom also. He's supposed to drink water during the day, and asks for it, but never seems to drink enough. My Mom had one of those huge water "bottles" that you use when you're in the hospital, with the attached straw. She fills it to a certain point and he's supposed to drink it all during the day. He rarely does. One thing he does like is ice cream, though. And when you think about it, this is just frozen milk for the most part. So he has a bowl of ice cream every evening after supper. He is also given a liquid at each meal -- orange juice for breakfast, usually milk or juice for lunch, flavored milk with a snack at mid-day, and juice at supper. This way, while he's not always drinking water, he's getting liquid. Try to make sure your Dad is given food with natural juices, also, as was posted in the previous reply. Cantaloupe is good. Also, cereal with milk is a good idea. Hope this helps!
Try watermelon (any melon helps but watermelon has most water), berries of all sorts or even the flavored water, sparkling or not. These are the things I do for my mom. Hope someone can offer more. Blessings
