Is there any financial aid for seniors, beside social security? What about food stamps, or any other such thing?

I was recently laid off from my job as a construction estimator. I am looking for another job, but believe my age (78 years old) does not help being hired.
We only have our social security income to live on, which is not much.
We own our home and have some bills such as a car loan, and a loan for new HVAC systems installed this year. If I cannot find a job, is there any financial assistant programs, for us, and can we get things such as food stamps, and the like?
