83 yr old dad w DLB has 24/7 home hospice care says he is not on deathbed. His BP is suddenly too high. They're asking for DNR?

we say no to the DNR at this point. Yesterday he was singing songs to the nurses, today the BP has spiked way high. he usually has low BP. they are medicating him so he mostly sleeps and now calling for bringing in morphine. not sure what is going on. all nurses don't think he is on death bed. we are not sure what to make of all this. sis called me from fla in a panic. she lives with mom (w early dementia) and dad there, I am in MA

Not sure about that with hospice and DNR. Dad is not in pain and we have decided that the ver medicating to keep him calm is not going to continue. We can. To assess him with him sleeping all the time. Today he is more alert and we are pleased with that. The morphine they gave him was to bring the BP down, which it did and it has remained stable.

What an upsetting situation, to say the least. You are probably wise to wait until you can get a full update on his condition before making that decision. I assume he is not suffering a lot of pain, or the decision would be easier. You don't want him to die early for no good reason, but you don't want him to suffer.

I do wonder --- I thought a DNR was a fundamental part of hospice. Is that not true?
