Mom is insisting the cleaning lady took all of her good pants. The pants in the closet are hers. How do I handle this?

She does have dementia. She says the pants have small checks on them. Actually they are her plain pants that she has had for years.

"Well, darn, Mom. I don't know what happened to your checked pants! Let's go out (or online) and find replacement pants for you. Do you want them checked again, or something different this time?"

To her it is a reality that she had checked pants and that they are gone now. Without encouraging her false belief that the cleaning lady stole them, try to get into her reality and do something to comfort her.

If she agrees for you to buy pants for her yourself, stop at a thrift store (unless she is wealthy). The need isn't for a quality pair of pants ... it is to have her feelings validated.

The belief that things are being stolen is VERY common in dementia.
