Is there any finacial assistance for my mother-in-law who has Alzheimer's but has limited funds and is not eligible for Medicaid at this time?

File for VA Aid and Attendance ASAP. It is taking a year for widows. Fill out the 21-534ez app...along with all other needed forms and supporting docs. After 4 months or so, contact your local US congressman. They may be able to help push it through faster....the VA sits on widow apps...widows are at the bottom of the totem pole.

Yes, get started on getting the VA information. I had to contact a local American Legion (# was provided by a relative). Then i had to get proof from the VA. There was a big fire that had destroyed VA records so that took a while.

Has she applied for Medicaid and why is she ineligible? Is her ineligibility for the medically needed aspect of Medicaid (requiring skilled nursing care) or is it on the financial part of Medicaid that is the issue?

I don't understand your question. What are you looking to accomplish? Does your mother in law need to go into a nursing home? Why is she not eligible for Medicaid?

Janet, the VA has benefits for widows if your Dad was a wartime veteran, as the previous poster stated---however, be prepared to gather a lot of information, his discharge papers, marriage papers ---lots to fill out . We did all this for my mother in law and after a year, we are still waiting to hear back from them. It is a very long process so don't expect a timely answer from the VA.

Check with your local council on aging, senior friendship center and or state department of elder affairs. There are a few programs which vary from state to state and sometimes from county to county which may provide some assistance for those on Medicare but who do not yet qualify for Medicaid. We have not found a lot of these resources, however, and some have limited funding and long waiting lists. There seems to be a gap between on Medicare and AD but not needing a full-time setting and when they are ready for a full-time memory care unit.
