Mom receives 3000 per month approx but most of money goes to bills. Is there help for caregiver?

My mother has moved in with me she is 88 yrs old. She has bills and also helps my handicap sister. I recently lost my job, I need help with food, expenses in setting up handicap bath - insulation and diapers. Is there any help out there when parent has no extra money. Perscriptions as well.

Your mother is 88, so prescriptions should be mostly covered under her Medicare plan. If they aren't, shop for an Advantage plan that will take care of it or look into adding Part D. Cost of her care, e.g. house renovations and diapers, should be paid by her. $3K a month is a generous amount for a senior to have, so you shouldn't be using your own money, since you don't have a paycheck. Does your mother have any savings that she could tap into to provide for her needs?

It is wonderful for her to help your handicapped sister. I don't know the story there, but I wonder if it should be at your expense until you get back on your feet. And I wonder if something could be worked out there. I don't know how much your sister needs, but maybe there are other resources she could tap into so your mother would have enough money for herself. I hope that you are able to juggle finances so things work out. I doubt that your mother could qualify for many things since she gets $3K a month.

I've heard depending on your particular state that you may be able to get some compensation from the state as your mother's caregiver. You could contact your local Area Agency on Aging as a starting point to find out. Still I must say $3000 a month is plenty for your mother to live on per month and you should be cautious about using her money for anything that could be seen as purely your expenses because if she ever needs to be on Medicaid there's the 5 year look -back. I'm sorry you lost your job and hope you can work something else out.

Does your mother have any assets, like stocks, bonds, property, etc.?
