My Dad (93 yrs old) is now in a nursing home in the East Bay area of northern California. I sold my home and moved to this area to be near him because he is very fragile. I started looking for an apartment -- something small and inexpensive. As if I am not stressed quite enough, I now discover that housing in this area is more expensive than I can afford PLUS owners want at least a one-year lease. I cannot afford to settle down here in northern CA. So once Dad dies (probably in less than one year), I will need to move back to the east coast.
Can anyone who lives in the Castro Valley-Hayward-Fremont area suggest where I might look for a small efficiency apt or room with private bath? I walk a lot to help reduce stress, so I need to live in a safe area. I tried Craigslist and the local newspapers. I do not qualify for senior housing. Thank you. CaregiverAgain

Go to local universities or community colleges in the area and check bulletin boards for apts, rooms for sublet, etc. -- they are sometimes cheaper. Sometimes if you offer to work as apt mgr, they can give you an apt at discounted rent.
Have you thought about taking on assignment as a temporary live in caregiver for someone else or nanny situation? Not sure you want this, but a thought.
