Hi, everyone. My mom just got on Medicaid. Should she still have her Medicare Supplemental Insurance policy? Can she keep it if she wants? There is an insurance salesman at their house right now who says it is illegal for him to sell her a Supplemental Insurance policy if she is on Medicaid, but the local Area on Agency said they would help her find the policy that is best for her and she does not have to wait for the open enrollment period to change over. I don't know who to trust, so I hope there is a legal expert who has advice. They live in Iowa. Thanks!

I suspect the insurance agent is right -- he can't sell a policy to a Medicaid participant. But that would not necessarily mean there is no insurance company involved. Does Mom have a Medicaid case worker yet? When she does, this is a great subject to discuss with that person.
Medicaid does cover some medications but the supplemental reduced his out of pocket costs. I believe it was $20 or so per month.
