Have you ever hired someone to sit in the hospital with your loved one?

I stayed with my Mom while hospitalized a few months ago and they were trying to find a medication to stop the sundowning but she was hallucinating. After 36 hours of no sleep I had to go home and get sleep. When I returned, I was told that I could NEVER leave her alone and would have to hire someone to stay with her. I stayed day and night for 8 days and only took one night off for sleep. Do all hospitals do this ? Are we now REQUIRED to spend the night or hire a hospital sitter? Anyone else run across this?

You would most definitely try to calm them down and reassure them that they are safe. Just try to make them feel as comfortable as possible. Hopefully bring them some peace.

I've never heard of this kind of requirement. What does the sitter do - physically restrain the person or just call the nursing staff to restrain them? Or talk them down to a calmer state?

I had to do that last month when my Mom was hospitalized. She kept hallucinating and trying to climb out of the bed, was tearing out her iv's and heart monitor thingies (not sure what they are called LOL). So in her case, there was no way I could leave her. It was excruciating!!! But from what I understand, yes, it has become a thing now. I did hire someone to sit for a few hours one afternoon so I could catch a break.

I am assuming that is the policy of that particular hospital. I think they are all different and have different policies. Too bad you didn't have family to help. You can always hire a sitter if that is affordable to you. Sounds pretty harsh, I feel for you.

Never did it yet. But I think nothings wrong,as long as they're capable of taking care of your loved one.
