When a person is in the late stages of Dementia, is there an average number of years they can survive this way?

Husband can't talk, doesn't understand much in the way of other people's words or actions, can hardly walk, is incontinent, very combative with caregivers, but with no other actual physical problems. I am just wondering how long this phase may go on, and how much worse it will get.

Lousey, I remind myself of all the good years he had, and that I don't really know what's going on inside his mind, there may be some memories every now and then that he's enjoying. My husband still responds to hugs, so when I visit I give him long hugs, and hold his hand, and rub his back. He'll hug me back and sometimes smile and I count these things as happy times!

My husband went into a Alzheimer's care unit in October 2012. He has not said a word for over 3 yrs , has a hard time walking, is incontinent, does not feed himself, I am wondering how much longer he will live on. I thought we were going to lose him at Xmas but he came out of it. It is so heart breaking to see him deteriorating Why is this disease so cruel?

I'm sorry, I don't know, because I did not visit him there. He no longer knew who anyone was.

My husband wandered all last summer, often brought back by police. He's in a nursing home now. What further symptoms did Harold have during that year in the nursing home?

When my good friend Harold got to this point, he began leaving the house and wandering. The police returned him home several times, but within a year he needed a secure nursing home memory care unit. He died within a year after that. He had Alzheimers.
