Mom has no short term memory left and gets mad when I lay her pain meds out for her. How do you cope?

I tried to do this before and she was so hateful, I gave the bottle back. It didn't turn out well...she overtook and then was in withdrawal when they ran out. I know I have to stand my ground with this, but how do I not let her hatefulness take it's toll on me? We have never argued in my life...and to have her act so hateful is really painful. She will be 85 in April, and I guess I'm just looking for some advice on how others handle it when their mom or dad becomes angry/hateful a lot.

Her behavior during the time she ran out was terrible, yes. But she doesn't want me to lay our her medicine and keep the bottle, when she was not in withdrawal, because of pride and says things like I'm treating her like a child. I've tried to explain multiple times that I'm just trying to help her so she doesn't end up in the same situation. I try not to say things regarding her memory because she's very upset that her mind is going. But every day, it's the same issue, because she doesn't remember any conversation we've had.

As with any kind of medication, stopping it can be dangerous unless directed by a Dr. Especially pain meds. Once someone starts taking them for any length of time they go through a very painful withdrawal when the drug is withheld. If your mom's Dr. wants her to discontinue any medication then he needs to direct your mom (or you) on how to taper down. Her behavior could be a result of medication withdrawal.
