Applying for Medicaid. Any advice?

I have been in touch with some social serivce people but unfortunately they have been super slow getting back to us and not been of much help but we really need to get the ball rolling. We are going to be applying for some assistance to get her into either an ASL or Skilled Nursing Facility which they deem more appropriate but need some help. Will Medicare pay for any of this?? Since Mom (85) lives with us and does not own her own home do they go buy only her income (social security) or does our income come into the equation?? Do I need to get an elder lawyer involved. We live in PA and this is all so new to us and I want to make sure we proceed in the right way is getting her the best care that she needs. Thanks

Ok so what it the 5 year look back........This sounds like it is really going to be complicated!! And how did you learn so much, I have just been looking into this the past 2 weeks and am overwhelmed with all the different information :(

The conversation starts with her MD, he is the one who makes recommendation for placement. A good ALF will need his evaluation plus do their own assessment. Since you are in PA, there are "Filial Responsibility" laws and Nursing Homes in PA are very good at forcing children to pay the bill.
Forget Medicaid, once they see the 5-year look back, they won't give you a penny. We did get Mom into an ALF and her $1600/ mo SS plus $1000/mo VA will cover her for now. Once she has a clean five-year record, and she is in a full skilled nursing facility, Medicaid might be an option.
