We employ a live-in caregiver to care for my mother who has dementia/Alzheimers. What is necessary to deduct these expenses on her taxes?
She is in the moderate to late stage of her condition. She cannot cook, bathe, or care for herself when she is incontinent or has diarrhea. Also unable to prepare her weekly medicine or remember to take it on time. She requires constant supervision.
First the care would have to be medically necessary, per her MD. Second, you break down what percent of the care is medical care. You can't write off housekeeping, laundry or cooking. It would be well worth it to have a CPA or tax consultant do this for you at least once.
