My Mama has Vascular Dementia and she is getting pretty bad. What can I do?

She is having hallucinations thinking she has 2 or 3 more puppies. She keeps accusing me on killing them or taking them off. What can I do? Is there any medicines that helps with this phase? I need help please.

Mama is having trouble remembering words for items. I try to give her little task to do because she is always wanting to help so I will tell her to put ice in a glass. I usually hand her a glass or she will grab a bowl or anything at hand. Then she does not know where the ice is or what the freezer is. She puts dirty dishes in the refridgerator. She goes out on the porch at night calling the puppies and get so very angry at me. I am so lost!

You might hang on and get a visit with a geriatrician or geriatric neurologist rather than hit the ER....This has got to be awful for both of you if she thinks you are killing puppies on a daily basis.

if shes really end stage the er can jack her full of haldol. she'll still be tripping but much more calm. my mother had haldol injections monthly for her last 3 months of life combined with oral haldol daily for smaller adjustments. haldol is just an old school tranq' .

i agree with pam. take her to er. uti's will be frequent and throw her into tailspins. my aunt just went thru this in the last two weeks. the uti was so bad they kept her in hospital for a week to clear it up. she may reach a state of constant hallucinations at end of life but this may not be happening yet.

Try getting her some stuffed animal toys she can keep close by. The feel of their "fur" my give her comfort.

She absolutely needs your help. It must be a nightmare to not know what common items are or where your puppies are. I am afraid this dementia is going to get much worse, as the night goes on.

pamstegman, Should I take her knowing that this is a part of her disease? Do you think they will be able to help her in anyway? Sorry for the questions but the emergency room never occurred to me. It would be like taking her every night but tonight she was really upset and crying and so angry at me. She has never gotten to the point of crying before.

Take her to the ER ASAP.
