Can you help with finding affordable (lower income) Independent Senior Care apartments or houses?

You can find your local Area Agency on Aging in our directory and contact them directly to schedule an appointment." BEWARE: as usual, the COAs in major cities have FAR MORE resources (larger budgets/more funding) than outlying areas/suburbs. For ex., my "local" COA has 1 (yes, ONE) social worker on staff for the entire county (or Parish, here in LA); whereas, the Greater Baton Rouge COA has been my lifeline--literally. They cover 10 parishes in SE La. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a drive to take Mom there for day programs (approx 2 hrs round-trip), so it kind of defeats the purpose of much-needed respite care, but I'm working on getting my uncle to take her. God, let me ask him on a good day; he's younger than Mom, but he's not "all there" either!

Peacherino: I can't remember if I answered your question (shocking, I know!), but I live in South Louisiana. I lived in Dallas from 1985-90, so I wasn't exactly dealing with any of this then, but I still have GREAT friends in the DFW area who HAVE gone thru this, if you want me to ask them for more info.

I don't know about TX, but we have a "Governer's Office on Elderly Affairs" that has helpful info on housing, financial and tax advice, etc.

Response to pamstegman---I'm not saying that you're entirely wrong about your information. However, California, for example, is WAY more expensive than Dallas!! Not to mention New York City....and even Illinois. The Chicago area, is FAR more expensive than Dallas/Ft. Worth. And their waiting list is unreal for Section 8 or "housing vouchers" and they rarely take new applications. However, I should have been more specific. We are NOT interested in living in Dallas. I should have said Ft. Worth, really. I have done a little checking...into getting housing vouchers in Ft. Worth, and there doesn't seem to be the problem that Dallas has. I'm not worried about the Medicaid too much--- Ft. Worth has an excellent low-income John Peter Smith health system and my husband gets his health care from the VA. We have already applied to one Senior Independent Living complex here in Ft. Worth, and there are many more. I was simply asking for a list of Senior Housing. My entire family lives in Ft. Worth, so we WILL be moving here, and I'll bet we have no problems. You seem a little pessimistic to me.....

Good Grief the Dallas Fort Worth area is one of the most expensive places to live in the US. You might end up regretting this. HUD in Dallas has so many people on waiting lists, they often stop taking applications. Plus Texas is NOT expanding Medicaid and Ilinois IS expanding Medicaid. So you may hit a waiting list for that too.
