Do you let your agency's caregiver administer meds to your loved one who couldn't take meds them self?

If you would hire respite caregiver for your loved one at your home....say just for couple of hours a day/days from AGENCY, so you could take a little break. My questions is "Do you let your agency's caregiver to administrated(physically) med to your loved one who couldn't take meds them self?" Of course if they are RN or LVN from agency, it would be fine.... how about CNA or just caregiver if they do it would be against State Law?

If I was in California and the CNA had the certification to pass meds, which CA allows, sure I would. If they have the certification, they should know how to assist and what to do when the patient chokes.

Hi Mindy, Pam I do understand how Agency does business... my question was you would let CNA to gave your father's medications(pills) physically into his mouth?

by "physically" I'm guessing this is an infusion or injection or tube feed and could go badly in the wrong hands.

I would not ask someone to risk their license and employment and break the law. The agency would blackball you too. Finally, would you risk the safety of your loved one by doing this? Maybe an ALF would be better for them?

We have been using CNA's from an agency for 3+ years. They have my sister put Dad's pills in one of those plastic dispensers once a week and then they are allowed to give him the meds from the dispenser morning and night. If my sister can't go over, they have to send a nurse over to put the pills in the dispenser. Does that make sense? Sounds crazy, but that is how our agency does it.
