Kicked out of Hospice because one is not on Medicaid. Can this be true?

I don't know if this applies to your situation or not, but a friend of mine recently lost his father, who was on hospice for a short time (less than two weeks). He was moved from the hospital to a hospice facility, and, although the hospice services were covered by Medicare, the "room and board" charges at the hospice facility were not. Since my friend's father was not on Medicaid (which he was told would have covered the charges), he had to pay out of pocket. It was explained that if the father had been in a nursing home or assisted living facility, those charges would not have been covered either. This was news to me, and something to remember when choosing a location for hospice. Is it possible that your friend's father does not have coverage for the room and board and that is why he is being evicted? My father died in a hospital under hospice care seven years ago, and the hospital charges were covered by Medicare. Maybe the rules have changed since then?

This is definitely not true as Medicare will pay for hospice and there are non-profits that do not require money at all. Tell your friend to find another hospice to care for her father in his last days/months preferably free.

Thanks for the replies. I've found out he is 59 years old so does not qualify for medicare. But he also is diagnosed with PTSD and my research shows this will
sitisfy medicare and he may be eligible for SSI.

The only time hospice is discontinued is if the patient goes to the ER or to their Dr. or otherwise seeks out medical care. And pam's right. Medicare covers hospice, not Medicaid.

Not true, because Hospice is covered by Medicare, not Medicaid.
