Is it safe to give a 98 year old with a heart condition a perm?
My 98 year old aunt gets her hair done every 2 weeks. The hairdresser comes to the house. I am concerned that having her under the hot dryer for 40 minutes for a perm is too long.
My 94-year old mom has perms every four months or so. She has Atrial Fib and has not had any bad results from her perms, other than she stinks (from the ammonia) for a while. She can't even smell it, but I can. :)
Nobody gets a perm every two weeks. If they did the hair would break off and nothing would be left. A wash and set with the dryer on low heat should not hurt her. Perms or coloring are usually 6-8 weeks apart. If she can survive the smell of ammonia, she is OK. Basically a perm uses ammonia to swell the hair and hydrogen peroxide to bond the curl. I have never seen a warning for heart effects on a perm box.
