What now? Momr being kicked out of rehab/skilled nursing in 1 week.

Does she have Medicare? I know that people with Medicare can appeal discharges from hospitals. It will buy you at least a few days to make some plans. Maybe there is something similar in place for skilled nursing facilities.

Trying still, YES you are right, they are offloading a patient with a "vocal" family member. Facilities share this information and the patient ends up virtually blacklisted. You get to take her back home until Ms.Vocal changes to Ms. Agreeable.

A week is a good thing. They came by one morning at 9am to Mother's room and gave us until 3pm to make other arrangements. She had stopped progressing in rehab and no beds available in nh. Thank goodness the urine test the day before showed severe UTI and they allowed her to stay for 72 hours, giving us time to get home set up. We could not believe it.

Gosh poor you what a horrible situation and am not impressed with the lack of support you were given why do we treat our elders with such disrespect it should be a social workers job to find and discuss alternatives and you should have been given more notice this is a disgrace. Would a cancer patient be treated this way NO and why is that? why does mental health have to be so badly handled adding more and more stress on the cargiver and family.
I hope you get her sorted soon this is all ahead of me and im so scared of the crap ahead of me.

Thanks for your reply. She doesn't have long term insurance, but she does have some money that will last for a limited amount of time. Unfortunately, when her money is gone, she makes about $100 too much every month to qualify for Medicaid in an ALF. In a nursing facility, she would qualify for Medicaid when her money runs out. I just don't know how they think she's able to go to assisted living when they told us she wasn't able to before when she was at home and ambulatory. Now she's in a wheelchair all the time and they're saying she can go to assisted living? It doesn't make sense. If I didn't know better, I would think they're trying to get rid of her because my sister has been very vocal about problems there and she has insisted that Mother get a shower daily, when none of the other patients do. And also my mother has been very vocal and negative saying things like, "This is a bad place." "No you didn't get me my medicine." They always get a witness to watch them apply medication to my mother's legs because Mother accuses them of not doing it. I know part of it is the dementia and Mother can't help that, but I wonder if they think she's just too much trouble and takes up too much of their time.

Rehab does get cut off if progress seizes. Sorry for the situation, specially since you found a place she is happy with. I would spend the next few days in an intense search for an ALF facility that will take her, even if not ideal and you look to move her again when you find something more suitable. Does she have long term insurance or funds to pay for an ALF?
