Dad in assisted living memory area keeps falling frequently. Is this common with people with dementia?

Unfortunately, yes it is common, because they refuse to use their walkers or just plain forget. If they fall in a facility, the rules usually require transport to ER to check for broken bones. Mom fell and insisted she was fine, but she had a broken shoulder and a nasty bruise on her knee. They can't take any chances at the ALF, they keep them down and transport.

Kailaurmom, I read your profile, and my Dad has the same issue with falling and having problems getting up out of a chair, and my Dad doesn't have dementia. It is just part of the aging process. But have your Dad checked out for an inner ear infection or allergies.... that can make most of us, at any age, feel unbalanced.

Plus since your Dad has arthritis in his ankle, he could be slightly twisting his ankle... so very easy to fall when that happens.... no different than some of us gals when wearing certain high shoes.
