Neighbor (88) has not eaten more than a couple of bites of food in 3 weeks. What will interest her in food?
Drinks 2 Boosts a day. Says she is not hungry. Will eat perhaps a few bites of a fruit or half a boiled egg. Has only lost a few pounds. I am at wits end as how to motivate her to eat.
My mom is the same way. Boost in morning and if I am lucky a few bites of food, maybe some pudding for lunch and at night Boost and a few more bites. Dr. gave her a pill that was suppose to improve appetite but I see no differences. As for getting water down her forget it, I don't see how she isn't dehydrated.
She does dislike cooking after here many years. Point well taken regarding eating less calories but I doubt she has a calorie intake of 300 of solid food. Is two cans of Boost enough?
Was your neighbor the type of person who *eat to live* instead of *live to eat*?
Those of us who are the *eat to live* type don't have that much interest in food. If I could take a pill that would give me all the calories I need in a day, I would take that pill. I hate cooking, always had... so cooking was placed on the back burner [sorry for the pun].
And like Pam had said above, most of us can't eat as much as we did 30 years ago. I use to go out with family and have a 3 course meal.... now a days the first course is enough, I want to take home the entrée and desert which would last me several days.
At some point they have difficulty swallowing solids. Caloric requirements are much less than they would be for someone who is active. This is natural, after all I can't eat as much as I did 30 years ago. So you pack in dense calories, like ice cream with the fruit and butter on the egg. If she is 5'0" and 110 lbs and sedentary, she only needs 1334 calories a day. Go to active and use the calorie calculator and nutrition calculator.
