Do Alzheimer's patients always want to eat only sweets and stop eating things that they used to?

My husband started ALZ about a year ago, although I think he started about a year before that. He wants only sweets to eat and says he is not hungry for anything else.. Tells the most outrageous stories and has to be reminded to do everyday things. He can't remember for even 5 minutes. Left garbage in my veggie basket and when I found it ,what a mess. These things happen a lot lately.I have to remind him to take a shower. How our life has changed. Normal?

I don't think craving sweets is only for people with dementia, but for elderly people in general. The sweet taste buds are the last to fade away, so sweet still has a rewarding flavor. The good thing about this is that if the appetite wanes, elderly people are still often tempted with things like ice cream, yogurt, cookies, and fruit. It is a good way to get calories and nutrition for them.

My mother has also begun putting garbage where it shouldn't be. I've learned that it doesn't help to mention it to her. I just put all the potential garbage-can substitutes out of her immediate reach. If it isn't easy to get to something, she won't use it for trash.

It is very common for a patient to crave simple, easily digestible calories. Digesting meats actually is a lot of work for the body, so you switch to peanut butter and jelly. Flavored cream cheese offers dense calories. Boost or Ensure plus gives nutrition and a nice flavor. Go to Senior Living box above and click on Alzheimer's Care for more information.
