My Mom (90) is bedridden and has difficult swallowing. Any advice?
She is on a pureed diet which is causing diarhea. We bought the nutribullet which is great for breaking down healthy food for her but is all this mushy food causing the problem? We are concerned about bedsores. Thank you in advanced
Lori, to do this properly, you need to boil the rice with lots of water in the pot. As you know, when the rice cooks, it absorbs the water. So make sure you have a lot more water. If you want to conserve on the rice (and not waste it just because you only want the water), I googled for a recipe.
Since there is no exact instruction, this is the best I can come out with.
1. Half a cup of rice (about 125ml), slightly rinse with clean water. 2. Put rice in a large pot. 3. Add 2 liters of water into the pot, and put to boil. Occasionally stir the rice so that it won't stick on the pot. 4. Continue boiling at medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes. The rice need not be fully cooked. The rice water should appear very diluted and not starchy. If starchy, then it is too thick and more water should be added until it is watery. 5. Discard or just separate the rice from the water. It is only the rice water that we want.
You can store any excess rice water in the fridge.
I looked after an old lady years ago in france she told me about rice water? keep the water that you boil your rice in and its supposed to stop diarrhea worked for her? worth a try? also maybe more fibre in her diet? some allbran in the puree?
