Does anyone have any experience being with someone who exhibits constant lip smacking or tardive dyskinesia?
My boss who is 83 constantly smacks his lips in his office. It sounds like a dripping faucet allllllll daaaaayyyyy looooong. I can't get earplugs or I won't hear the phone and he gets annoyed if I play music.
i'm not nearly as qualified nor knowledgable about any medical conditions that might contribute. All i know is that [due to meds] i have "dry mouth syndrome." i drink an inordinate amount of water... and the nephrologist advises me to instead, suck on dry candies. Perhaps because of dry mouth or even dentures, he has the sensation of 'drooling' and it's a misguided attempt to not drool [?] - could you put a little bowl of hard candies [small/inexpensive - i find Jolly Ranchers are too large - they take forever to disolve ;-) ] - but any individually wrapped hard candies might help out. If it were a lady, i'd gift her a nice lice gloss/balm - but an 83-yr old man would not take kindly to that. Sugarfree hard candies [there are little bags of different types at the $1 store - esp Dollar Tree]. And they have the little plastic or glass bowls for $1. At 83 --- that business was his life's goal, even if he is not in a decision-making capacity / role now. Lots of luck to you - and bless your heart for caring!
I'm gobsmacked somebody would want to keep coming into the office at 83. That's a huge corporate risk right there that would make me find another job! I worked at a company where the guy who started it was going senile, but kept coming in and practically ran the place into the ground. His reasoning skills were g-o-n-e.
If your boss's family is going to deal with this, you certainly can't. Me...I'd be outta there.
It definitely could be the meds he's on. There are certain medications that give dry mouth and psychotic meds will cause tics. It must be frustrating. Pray about it!
Could dental issues be the cause of it? My mother in law does this all the time and I have teenagers. You can imagine what is going on! Anyway, she has a "root tip" the dentist says needs to be removed. I am hoping that will solve it. I am not sure it will work that is my own idea.
Most likely a side effect from some medication he is on. Lip smacking and finger staring is actually a minor type of seizure activity. I hope he has a good Neurologist, but it would be a major faux pas for you to suggest that.

I know how annoying it is. My Dad did it when eating. He was not the kind of man anyone said anything to.
